In Chapter 8, we read about Irish revolutionary, Bobby Sands, and why there are streets and businesses named after him in Iran. Mask explains the connection and tells us why “Sands’s death took on mythic proportions” in this middle eastern country.
The author references Pedram Moallemian’s story about why and how an IRA revolutionary came to mean so much to Iran. Here, you can read a narrative account (Links to an external site.) of the incidents described in this chapter, as well as some additional insights.
For this lesson’s discussion in 150 – 250 words:
Reflect and Write: Compare the descriptions and the information about Bobby Sands and Iran within the chapter with those in Moallemian’s first-person account. How does the narrative add to the information presented in the chapter? What new insights are you able to gain? What would you like to know more about? What conclusions can you draw by synthesizing this information?
Question: Pose a question to your classmates that you had when considering this week’s discussion prompt. Be sure to make it an open-ended question (How? Why? What if?).
Connect and Reply: Please post and then respond to at least two of your peers. Be sure to add to the discussion in a meaningful way by asking questions, extending the ideas presented by your classmate, or adding more information.
Scaffolding: This writing assignment provides you with an opportunity to practice academic writing in a low-stakes environment (e.g., moving from general to specific, providing support for claims, organizing your ideas, and considering our audience). This chapter provides a model for the kind of exploration we’re producing in our collaborative project (e.g., considering how social, cultural, political, and economic contexts shape a place, weaving in research to tell the story about a place).
