Develop a coherent argument. In other words, does the flow of your paper make sense and aid your audience’s understanding of whether or not what you are reviewing is of good or bad quality and value?

The Hate You Give
Audience and Purpose
Your magazine will be made up of a variety of articles. One of these articles will be a review.

What might you review? First, whatever it has to be recent. For example, a movie that is in theater now, an album that is on the charts now, a book that came out recently, a restaurant that is currently open, or an academic or even sports program here at CU that you are currently involved in (or follow, or want to be a part of). These are just a few of the types of things we can review, and we will discuss more of them in class that you might choose from.

Advice
In an evaluation, you make claims concerning quality and value. For example, you might discuss the quality and value of the English program by discussing the distinguished teaching awards the faculty in the Department have received or special speakers that the Department has brought in to CU and then relate how these notable achievements and events benefit the student body or the CU community in general.

One way of thinking about this essay is to establish criteria that make up quality and valuable things like an academic program, movie, etc., defend those criteria (why they are important and relevant), then show how it meets or does not meet those criteria.

Engage your audience’s interest, develop your thesis, and forecast your paper.
Establish criteria, defend those criteria, and show how what you are reviewing meets or does not meet those criteria.
Establish your credibility. In other words, how well do you present yourself?
