To increase your ability to articulate in writing a critical perspective on a contemporary global issue using evidence as support, you will write 1250 word paper focused on transnational families and poverty, incorporating evidence from the textbook, Sacrificing families: Navigating laws, labor, and love across borders, and at least one additional source. Your paper should explain the relationships among gender, poverty and immigration, using El Salvador and the United States as a case example.
Your paper should contain the following sections:
List the title of the paper, your name, the class, and the date of the assignment.
Begin your paper with a discussion of the worldwide division of labor and how El Salvador and the United States fit into the global stratification system.
How has the history and social context of El Salvador helped to push its citizens out of the country? How have U.S. policies encouraged and discouraged Salvadorian migration?
End this section with an organizing thesis or question.
Body of the paper (no section headings are required):
Describe the gendered nature of immigration.
How are motherhood and fatherhood understood in El Salvador, and how do these beliefs influence the reasons for why mothers and fathers migrate to the United States? How do mothers and fathers fare in the United States (include examples related to their physical, social and financial well-being). How do gendered expectations of the parenting role influence how much mothers and fathers send back to their families in El Salvador?
Describe immigration and workforce policies.
How do U.S. immigration policies and workforce practices influence the experiences mothers, fathers, and their transnational families have?
Describe the consequences for children, parents, & extended family members.
Be sure to discuss the varieties of experiences parents have both in their journeys to the United States, their abilities to return to El Salvador, and their ability to provide for their families.
Provide your analysis of whether family separation is worth it, providing examples for your reasoning.
On a separate page, include a list of your references (at least 2). You are required to format your Reference List according to the American Psychological Associations (APA) guidelines. Review the instructions for APA format (Links to an external site.).
The word “References” should be centered at the top of the page.
The reference list should be double-spaced and put in alphabetical order.
Remember to use the hanging indent format for each reference.
You may not use lecture notes as a second source for your paper. Instead, use sources found in the Additional Resources sections of your modules or use the library data bases to find a peer-reviewed social science journal article on the topic.
You must cite your source(s) using APA Guidelines (Links to an external site.).
Upload your paper via the submission link. Your paper should be typed and double-spaced. Please use Times New Roman 12 point font and 1-inch margins. (A paper with 1250 words, with the specified formatting, would be approximately 5 pages in length, not including a title or reference page.)
