Assignment # 1Write notebook entries in response to the following prompts. Save your responses in a WORD DOC 250 words min.
Shirley Jackson lived in a small village called North Bennington in rural Vermont: “I suppose I hoped,” she wrote in response to a reader who was stumped by the story, “by setting a particularly brutal ancient rite in the present and in my own village, to shock the story’s readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives.” Summarize the way she describes how the lottery is conducted: How would you characterize the tone of voice of her third-person narration? What attitude does she seem to express toward the ritual? Does this contribute to the shock a reader may feel?
Is there a scene in “Cathedral” that you might identify was the turning point or climax of the plot? What role does the setting of bub’s house play in helping define his character? He starts drawing the picture of a cathedral with a box “that could have been the house [he] lived in”–and after finishing the picture, he says that he knew he was in his house but didn’t feel like he was “inside anything” (Carver 414). Is the house a metaphor in some way? Is the image of the cathedral symbolic? And what about bub’s point of view: What do you learn about him from the tone of his first-person narration?
At the end of “Cathedral,” bub decides to keep his eyes closed: “I thought it was something I ought to do,” he says (Carver 414). Why do you think he feels this way? Does he want or need to “see” like a “blind man”? How “blind” has bub himself been as compared to Robert? As compared to a character like Old Man Warner? What might Carver or Jackson be expressing about the theme of blindness? Write about these matters and compare your own thoughts about one or more kinds of “blindness” you observe in people today.
Assignment #2
Write a tentative proposal for how you plan to address the task for Essay #1. What stories will you compare? What might your thesis, your debatable opinion, be–based on your understanding of why two characters choose, whether consciously or unconsciously, to act or feel or think in specific ways? What details, what passages, from the stories will you cite as evidence and illustration of your evaluation of the characters’ choices, the effects their choices have on them and / or others, and the themes their stories raise. Based on your own experiences and observations, what do you think about the thematic meaning or message of the stories you are interpreting? ( using In Literature: A Portable Anthology, read:
Shirley Jackson, “The Lottery” (350-57)
Raymond Carver, “Cathedral” (403-14) these to short stories)
Assignment #3
The task for Essay #1 is to compare / contrast the choices or decisions made by characters in two of the short stories you have read. (*** we will be using these 2 short stories Shirley Jackson, “The Lottery” (350-57)
Raymond Carver, “Cathedral” (403-14) ***) Gurov decides to seduce Anna for simple enough reasonsbut why does he then choose to continue the affair? Why does Calixta choose to commit adultery with Alcee? Why does Mama give the quilts to Maggie? Why does Lyman push the red convertible into the river? Why do the villagers continue practicing the lottery? Why does bub ask Robert if he knows what a cathedral looks like? Begin by formulating some question you are curious to answer about two of the characters each from a different story.

Write about why each character makes a significant choice or decision but also about the effects that result and the issues that are raised. What are the pros and cons of each decision? Does the character learn or realize anything of significance because of what he / she decides to do? What conclusions do you come to about each character and / or about one or another theme that a narrator seems to raise by telling a story about what happened? Anna, for example, feels guilty and sinful when she first commits adultery but Calixta doesntwhat sort of gender issues might Chekhov and Chopin get a reader thinking about?

Explain what you think one or another narrator is expressing thematically, the message or meaning of the story. Also explain what you think about the issue, based on your own experience and observations.

Note that you do NOT need to retell an entire story. You can assume your reader is familiar with it and simply may need to be reminded of the details, the elements of a story, that provide illustration and evidence of your ideas. What does the irony in the plot of the stories by Chekhov or Chopin or Carver contribute to your understanding of Gurov or Calixta or bub? How does the setting of The Lottery or The Red Convertible or Everyday Use offer insight into issues the characters face? Is the image of the black box or the red
