Discussion 1

Professor Sandel asked:
1. What would you do? and
2. What is the right thing to do?
Are these two asking the same question or are they asking two different questions? Another way of thinking about it is would the answer to both of these questions always be the same?

Discussion 4
The majority thought that the right thing to do was to turn the trolley. Most of those though that the right thing to do was not to throw the fat man off the bridge. In fact, the reason given that it was right to turn the trolley in the first example seems to be a reason to think that you should throw the fat man off the bridge in the second example. Why does it seem problematic to adopt the majority opinion in both cases? Post an answer to this question.
