In addition, Plantation owners turned to Sharecropping and contract wage agreements that if broken would result in criminal actions in court against the Free Black tenant. That in turn resulted in fines and debt that if not paid, would result in forcing the black tenant back as convict labor on the plantation. Recall The Black Codes.”
