the assignment is answering these questions in at least two full pages – the Background issue:
“As the South began to industrialize in the later part of the 19th century after the Civil War, Mining and Railroad companies turned to convict labor as a cheap means of finding workers. In addition, Plantation owners turned to Sharecropping and contract wage agreements that if broken would result in criminal actions in court against the Free Black tenant. That in turn resulted in fines and debt that if not paid, would result in forcing the black tenant back as convict labor on the plantation. Recall The Black Codes.”
How does the documentary describe the relationship between local law enforcement, local courts, fines for criminal offenses by blacks and corporate interests, and or Planters in cheap labor? Give examples from the documentary to illustrate.
Discuss how the “loop-hole” in the 13th Amendment to the Constitution (1865) to free the slaves is related to local police and court actions against Free Blacks.
Can you draw any comparisons in police relations today with the black community that are illustrated in the documentary for the treatment of blacks by law enforcement and the courts?
