Discuss the ways in which English (British) literature is influenced by culture and the ways culture, including the class system and the influence of monarchy, is in turn influenced by the literature. For your major paper, you are going to pick a subgroup or topic within English culture and use literature and literary criticism to show the relationship between the subgroup and literature or the culture at large: how one impacts the other. You must use at least one work of English literature and one work of literary criticism. An example would be to look at the role of women in British literature through a study of Mary Astells Some Reflections upon Marriage, and a critical essay on gender in Mary Astells work, found using the databases in the JCC library. There are specific databases for literature that you can go to directly through the resources tab, like JSTOR, or you can use Summon to do a wide search through all the databases.
