As a field of study, IR is driven by a focus on the actors, institutions and structures of political action beyond the boundaries of the nation-state. It is concerned with the relationships between nation-states, and with the transnational institutions, such as the United Nations, of which such states form a part. Increasingly, it is also concerned with the role and influence of non-state, such as corporations and NGOs. In this module, students will be introduced not only to those mechanisms and institutions, but also to the key theories of International Relations, and to the main concepts and challenges facing the international political order in the 21st century.
