The purpose of this chapter is to show that you are aware of how your dissertation fits into the body of existing research in your field. To do this you need to:• describe the current state of research in your defined area• consider whether there are any closely related areas that you also need to refer to• identify a gap where you argue that further research is needed• explain how you plan to address or fill that particular research gapThis can lead into a clear statement of the research question(s) or problem(s) you will be addressing. It is worth taking time to develop a logical structure for sections in this chapter. This will help to convince examiners of the relevance of your research. It will also provide you with a framework for your discussion chapter. The Chapter can have two main sections as follows below: 2.1 IntroductionGive a brief introduction to the chapter, telling the reader what he/she should expect .2.2 Review of the background work- set the tone and context – this may include definitions etc- possible historical overview of development of your subject area- Theoretical foundations of the work- Explaining concepts etc- textbook information2.4 Review of relevant previous research- Highlight any relevant past work/studies in this area (e.g. any studies done seen by reading academic publications in conferences, journals etc),- You need to demonstrate an understanding of previous research.- Use previous research findings to inform your own work.- You need to demonstrate how your work fits in with what has already been done.- Sources to be as academic as possible (research papers, books, internet stuff). Make sure that there is a balance of sources and not only internet articles.- Search the library to find out which Journals address your problem area.- Excellent use of evidence to support arguments/ points.- Substantial evidence of good use of a wide range of sources.- Use of up to date information and relevant sources. Material used includes different types of evidence including contradictions and challenging information. Excellent balance between classical and recent academic references.
