What is the legal theory called “stare decisis”?

What is the legal theory called “stare decisis”? How does it work? Give examples of it working. Is it always followed? If not, why not? Give examples of that also. You have probably heard of one of the most famous individuals in our country’s legal history. His name is O.J. Simpson. A former football player and actor, Simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife and her friend. The criminal trial was televised live throughout the nation. People played hooky from work to watch. The entire notion was riveted to the TV screen. In the criminal trial, Simpson was found not guilty. About one year later, there was a civil trial where the families of the victims sued him for monetary damages as a result of the deaths. The evidence at the civil trial was the same as the evidence presented at the criminal trial. In the civil trial, he was found liable. What happened? How can two juries hear the exact same evidence and come up with such different verdicts?
