Most of the Navy and Marine Corps’ history has been conducting “peacetime” operations, including forward presence, deterrence, maritime security, diplomatic negotiation, and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief. Often overlooked but vitally important, these types of operations will remain omnipresent. The purpose of this short research paper is to investigate these operations. You will select a single peacetime operation (broadly construed) from the 19th century and write a 6- page research paper where you detail the operation and construct an argument for how the operation is part of the broader course themes of American naval history: (factors contributing to America’s growth as a world power) (causes /consequences of major wars the United States Navy and Marine Corps have fought).
