Dr. Patrick McGough, the director of the Oklahoma City County Health Department has asked you to develop a plan to increase the COVID 19 vaccination rates in minority populations in Oklahoma County, specifically the African American population.
Oklahoma County has a population of 800,000 persons with 15.8% (126,400) African American. Currently only 7% of those fully vaccinated for COVID have been African American. The minority community has demanded that the health department address these disparities. (*** Please note *** These percentages are no longer correct however that should not impact the assignment given the hypothetical situation you are responding to.)
Your proposal must include the following:
1. Write a brief introduction describing considerations for vaccinating African Americans for COVID 19 in Oklahoma County. Consider rates that African Americans are positive for COVID 19, are hospitalized for COVID 19 and die from COVID 19. Briefly describe health disparities in general that face this population. You may use data from the Oklahoma State Department of Health COVID 19 website. (5 Points)
2. Identify 3 barriers African Americans may face that contribute to low COVID 19 vaccination rates. (6 Points)
3. For each of these barriers, identify an intervention that could increase the likelihood that African Americans can get vaccinated. (6 Points)
4. Describe how you could measure or evaluate your interventions to increase COVID 19 vaccination rates in African Americans in Oklahoma County. (3 Points)
