What information do you need to know about these students to identify them as homeless?

thought of all the times that I could have helped students with resources if I had previous knowledge of their living arrangements. Based on what we know from the chapter, I would like for you to think about a possible scenario with your students. What could we, as professional school counselors, possibly set up in advance to gain knowledge of students’ living situations, without making them uncomfortable? Remember, many of the homeless students (or those living in extreme poverty) do not disclose the information voluntarily. Please read the link provided, especially section 725 pertaining to the definition of homeless youth. You should familiarize yourself with this so you’ll be prepared to assist students in this situation.

Your reflection should be 1-2 pages.

1. Describe a student in your school who may fit this definition of homeless (please do not use real names or identifying information about a real student. If you do not have a student fitting this definition, make one up for the sake of this assignment).

2. What information do you need to know about these students to identify them as homeless?

3. How would you decide whether or not to provide resources, or to report their situation to Child Protective Services?

4. Include the name and contact information for your school’s homeless liaison, as well as the name and contact information for the TEA McKinney-Vento Homeless Education State Coordinator.

Attach a copy of a Student Residency Questionnaire (which identifies homelessness).

Hint: You will find this on the TEA website.
