2000 words Guidance notesIt may be relevant for you to draw on previous practice experience, but your main focus should be on your progress to support your discussion. This assignment asks for evidence of your understanding of critical social work in relation to your own development in social work. You are expected to analyse the extent to which you are bringing together your academic and practice learning as a critical practitioner. You should link an account of your understanding of critical social work to an analysis of your progress so far. Using specific examples from your practice learning and other academic materials will help you to avoid being overly descriptive. The practice discussed is unlikely to be a neat ‘success story’. Indeed, you may prefer to select example/s which challenged you, made you learn something new and helped you to develop your critical practice. Perhaps a service user gave you difficult feedback or you were confronted with something in supervision which – although difficult to hear – has helped you to move forward? You might have been faced with a dilemma about resources or competing views which could not be neatly ‘resolved’. These could be good examples to draw on for this assignment. Remember to analyse these using your learning from theoretical materials. You should draw on your learning from the first five learning guides in KXY315. Select relevant materials to show how your ideas and practice are developing. It is most important that you avoid a descriptive account of your practice or of the theoretical materials. Instead of describing ‘what happened’, try to select relevant examples to show how you are drawing on ideas from KXY315 to inform your practice, and how and why your practice sheds light on – or makes you question – KXY315 theories. You should demonstrate how you have identified and thought about issues of power, racism and other forms of discrimination, and how this thinking has impacted your practice.Remember that critical social work practice demands a questioning stance and an understanding that different perspectives need to be considered. These might include those of different family members and professionals as well as competing theoretical perspectives. The different audio ‘voices’ on the KXY315 website provide some examples. Finally, you are advised to be selective about your practice examples. Using just one or two and discussing them in depth will probably best allow you to present the kind of analytical discussion that is required for this TMA.Learning outcomes• 1.
