Define the importance of goal setting in communicating direction and guiding behavior in organizations. Using the seven steps to goal setting listed below, establish a professional goal for yourself.
1. State the goal clearly, confidently, and positively.
2. Set the deadline. This can be done in terms of short-term and long-term deadlines.
3. Identify at least three known obstacles to goal completion. This shouldnt discourage you from working on the goal rather it better prepares you to overcome these obstacles.
4. Identify the people, groups, and organizations that can assist. Dont be afraid to ask for help. Making a list of places to go for help makes it easier to do so when the time comes.
5. List the benefits to achieving the goal. Be creative and think out of the box. Knowing the benefits will motivate you.
6. List the skills you need to achieve the goal. If you identify a skill that you dont have, acquire it.
7. Develop a plan. This is the how you plan to achieve the goal. The plan should be detailed and include a timeline. If you miss a deadline, reschedule it and keep moving forward.
