(These are logs, not supposed to be long, i purchased 2 pages so write a log on each page or double on a page just different paragraphs thank you so much! Please read stories from this book online it is free Kurtz, Jenifer, ed. American Literature I: An Anthology of Texts from Early America Through the Civil War)
Log 1: Read, as always, the introduction to Whitman in your text so you have biographical and literary context for the poetry you’re about to encounter. I also invite you, as time permits, to look at background presentations on YouTube and other resources to fill in gaps. The more you know about Whitman as a person, the more his poetry makes sense.
Choose 3 poems in the collection we have in our text and review these carefully. Read and reread and think before you move on to the next poem. Then, you’re ready to…
1. Comment on how Whitman presents his love for the common person and common, everyday interests. How does he accomplish this as a stylist?
2. Next, having considered his technique stylistically, write a brief commentary (2-3 sentences) on why Whitman was a troubadour of the common person? Why was this such a prevailing theme and what does it say about the emergence of a uniquely American literature/art form?
Log 2: Log Assignment
Read the Introduction to Dickinson in your text. Before you move into the poetry, think about how Dickinsons background shaped her poetic sensibility. Think about how isolation (self-imposed or otherwise) shapes a poets art. (What has Covid done to poetic imagination?)
Now, select 3 poems (or more) and read them carefully. Reread. Let the word choice (images and allusions) work on you.
1. Choose a central image in each of your selections and write about how Dickinson develops into a profoundly rich theme for the poem.
2. Next, comment generally in a summary paragraph on the effect of her writing on you. In what ways are you somehow changed by having read her work? What ideas come to you and how do you see things differently?
Log 3: (Teachers text) Obviously, I couldnt cover everything. So nows a chance, in this last log, to make a selection of your own! Whats caught your eye or captured your attention as we moved along through the text? Or, perhaps, what work from American literature during this period have you read in the past thats been important to you and youd like to share? (feel free to write what you want from this book or something interesting)
