Start by carefully reading and comparing Mark 12:28-31, Matthew 22:34-40, and Luke 10:25-37 several times (again, be sure to read and quote from the NRSV). Then without looking at any secondary literature, spend some time thinking about the relationship between these passages: Which episode do you think came first? Who might be borrowing from whom? Or do you think they all developed independently? How would you account for the similarities and differences? Now, decide on your own (don’t do research!) which of the synoptic solutions best accounts for the similarities and differences among these passages (and these passages only), and argue your case. This is not a stream-of-consciousness style reflection. You should offer a sustained textual analysis with ample supporting details: demonstrate your argument. Methodically give concrete examples from the assigned passages. Avoid colloquialism. Read through your work at least twice before submission to eliminate typographical and mechanical errors. A poorly supported and/or poorly written paper will not receive a high grade.
