In Gordon Woods Power and Liberty, the author claims that the thirteen new independent republican states in 1776 had no intention of creating anything more than an alliance among themselves (55). This directly led to the ratification of the Articles of Confederation in 1781. And yet, by 1787, the revolutionary generation was ready to overhaul the entire structure of the United States government.
According to Wood, why were the Articles of Confederation considered insufficient? How did the Federal Constitution address these deficiencies? Lastly, how did the Federalists (those in favor of ratification) win out over the Anti-Federalists (those who opposed the new constitution)?
