Through the first 11 lectures, weve learned various approaches to modify the genomes of plants as well as some strategies for vaccine development. For Exam I, your assignment is to:
[60 points, limit 3 pages, single spaced] develop a proposal to genetically engineer the plant of your choice in the manner of your choice in order to address a problem (disease associated, environmental, economic, etc.) that you feel is in urgent need of corrective measures.
Part A Rubrics:
1. Briefly explain the problem you would like to address and the organism you plan to genetically engineer (15 pts).
2. What method (i.e. vector system) for genetic modification will you use, and why? (10 pts)
3. Draw a diagram of the vector system you will use, with relevant details about selectable markers, gene expression control elements (eg. promoters, termination signals, fusion peptides, etc.) and any necessary elements to get the ultimate genetic modification/phenotype you want (20 pts).
4. Describe how you will introduce the construct(s) into your target organism, how you will reconstitute/propagate the organism and how you will determine that your modification worked. (12 pts)
5. Cite your references (any format is acceptable). (3 pts)
