Literary Argument Paper
When writing a literary argument, the writer focuses on a specific rhetorical element or
literary device to argue. After reading the story, you as the reader, determine what aspect of the
literary work will actually be argued. The stories you have read or are reading, are overflowing
with literary devices. You should have no difficulty choosing something to write about. Here is
the assignment: you are to write a two page using a rhetorical device to create an argument.
You may choose from any of the rhetorical devices but theme, conflict, or point of view will
probably allow for the best argument. You must use the text to prove your argument (citing
direct quotes or paraphrasing). The following is the format for this assignment:
I. Introduction
A. General background. Briefly mention the story but do not go into any details.
Also, in this paragraph, do not include direct quotes from the text.
B. Summary paragraph. Summarize the main/important details of the text. Do not
retell the story, simply hit the high points. Include either a thesis statement or
rhetorical question at the end of this paragraph. Whichever you choose, you will
prove with body paragraphs.
II. Body paragraphs. This is the support for your thesis or rhetorical question. You
must use the actual text of the story for support.
A.Point one.
