Don’t forget to prepare an essay plan: Use the Essay planning sheet and define the terms of the title to structure your essay. There will be an essay surgery during practical sessions in weeks 8 and 9 where you will be given feedback on your essays before submission.Tables or diagrams/figures are important additions to a scientific essay: Make use of tables or diagrams to add detail – these are not included in the word count. Be sure to include a descriptive title and legend for all figures, following the correct conventions (see Checklist on the VLE). Legends are not included in the word count, but should not exceed 200 words each.Referencing needs to be included throughout the essay: Be sure to cite references in the text for any information or figures you have sourced. List your references in a reference list at the end of the text. Use textbooks, scientific articles, and reputable websites. Consult the library website for Harvard Referencing Guidelines on how to cite references and format them in the reference list. Please consult your personal tutor for further guidance. See the VLE for Harvard Referencing Quick examples. Use the Checklist to check your work thoroughly.Presentation and clarity ensures that the essay is easy to read and understand: Answer the questions in your own words. Make sure to present your work neatly. Read through to check for any errors. Use appropriate scientific language and grammar.
