Question: Critically discuss and compare Broadbent’s (1958) theory of selective attention with that of Deutsch and Deutsch (1963). Your answer should include a discussion of empirical findings. The Intro of this paper provides a good starting point for discussing Broadbent from a contemporary perspective:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4186707/and here is some useful fMRI evidence for it:https://www.researchgate.net/publication/51555540_A_Unified_attentional_bottleneck_in_the_human_brainand , for more advanced discussion, these models show how Broadbent’s concept has been integrated into contemporary neuroscience:https://wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wcs.1575https://www.researchgate.net/publication/334260831_A_new_framework_for_understanding_vision_from_the_perspective_of_the_primary_visual_cortex Re Deutsch and Deutsch, late selection has now largely been discredited. This is a really nice paper that covers all the classic evidence of both theories (which you should include, before discussing the modern evidence ):https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.473.2890&rep=rep1&type=pdf As noted there, the early vs selection debate has largely been resolved by perceptual load theory, so that would be a good way to conclude (review here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0963721410370295) needs a lot of work and restructuring. You still don’t discuss the early evidence supporting each model, and the structure is still confusing. In the main body, first have a section on Broadbent where you describe the model, early evidence in support/against, then contemporary evidence (be sure to make clear how this is relevant eg. what does neuroscience methods tell us about when filtering occurs in the brain? and which regions/mechanisms are involved). And then, do the same for Deutsch. And then conclude with Lavie as the favoured modern way of reconciling the two views (which goes beyond the notion of a early/late filter)I’ve added some links to info and a short paper which should help you. Any citation needs to be from peer-reviewed academic papers from within the last 5 to 10 years.
