“Critically discuss the Ethical challenges of working in a specific criminal justice related field, providing examples and reflecting on your own competencies”. It is a 1500 word essay looking at ethics in the criminal justice system. The essay has 2 components: 1. Pick a discipline/ role within the criminal justice system (and remember, the criminal justice system isn’t just policing) Discuss the ethical challenges that this chosen position could face (as 1500 words isn’t very many, I would suggest you stick to one challenge- so you can discuss this one challenge in depth) When discussing this challenge you would look at the reasons why a person could be faced with this ethical dilemma So lets take example of detective And the dilemma is to withhold a statement of a witness that introduces doubt as to the guilt of your suspect You would discuss why a person may want to make this choice: Pressure from line managers to close a case You know the suspect is guilty of other things and needs to arrested- regardless of their guilt for this particular incident etc You would discuss this implications of making the decision to hide the statement- the impact on the individual, the impact on the criminal justice system, the impact on the person who has made this decision etcTHIS IS JUST AN EXEMPLE you are not to use it! As with any academic essay, I’m looking for academic references to support all of your arguements 2. The second componment (just a few paragraphs) is to put yourself into the scenario that you discussed in section 1. There is no right and wrong to this, you would talk about how YOU would deal with this situation, it may be that you are very introverted and anxious and wouldn’t feel able to tackle and challenge outright. It might be that you have a really strong sense of right/ wrong and need to stand up to what you feel is right. We have discussed these dilemmas several times in seminars (think back to the Indian polce officer who ticketed the Prime Ministers car at the start of term). You can talk of your experiences which make you behave in a certain way.
