Describe the book’s basic structure and provide a BRIEF synopsis.

This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin.
Instructions
Only students who signed up to review Browning need to submit a formal written review here. All students must read the book and participate in the discussion in the appropriate forum

book review: Once during the semester each student will write a book review and post a discussion question(s) related to that book. You will sign up (on a first come, first served basis) to review either Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front, Browning, Ordinary Men, or Hedges, War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. Due dates for each review are listed in the course calendar in the Content section. Only ONE formal written review per student–don’t be alarmed by the existence of multiple book review grade items in the D2L gradebook!

Written review:

I would advise you NOT to read existing reviews of the book prior to formulating your own first draft–having written numerous book reviews myself, I’ve found that once you read someone else’s take, it’s a lot harder to keep your own perceptions from being influenced. Thereafter if you’d like to compare notes with other reviewers you might do so productively. If you just synopsize another reviewer’s take, you’re not going to get much out of the project.

Your book review should provide a critical overview of the book, approximately 750-1000 words in length.

A strong book review should include the following:

an introduction, briefly setting the book in the context of the material which it explores
a discussion of the author’s background and an assessment of his/her qualifications for writing on the subject in question.
Describe the book’s basic structure and provide a BRIEF synopsis.
Identify the author’s major arguments or themes
critically assess any evidence he/she presents to support these themes by cross-referencing with other sources (and citing them!).
Point to specific passages that develop important themes in the text, and draw on evidence external to the book under review in order to develop your evaluation of the text–cite any passages that you consult!
Conclude by assessing the book’s strengths and weaknesses, and explain why you would or would not recommend this book to someone seeking to learn more about the issues to which it pertains. How might the book best be used?
Make sure to include citations with page references to passages that you focus upon in your review–you should of course also cite any outside materials that you draw upon in evaluating the book.
