Describe the results of the research article and discuss the findings.

WTL Part 3: Analysis of Primary Literature (Research Article)
using secondary literature for background information

In this section you will have the opportunity to read firsthand the primary article (research paper) that was highlighted or referenced in your tertiary article (Part 1). A secondary source or a “review article” written by an expert or experts in the field will be used as background information to complete this assignment.

Choose a review article (secondary literature) that will give you a good background for where the field (of your chosen primary paper’s topic) currently stands.

Critically read and review both readings. (You may find this article (Links to an external site.) helpful: “How to read and understand a scientific paper: a guide for non-scientistsDownload How to read and understand a scientific paper: a guide for non-scientistsPreview the document.”)

Using the review and the research article complete the following scientific method outline discussed in our class and write an essay that should be ~3 pages long (1200 – 1600 words, font 12, space 1.5):
Real world phenomenon: Here you will explain the important questions in the field (big picture), specific to the sub-discipline of your chosen topic. Why are people interested in studying this and what are the questions that need to be addressed (~3-4 sentences, 1st paragraph).

Background and Theory: Here you will briefly review the literature, what was known before the study of the research article was performed and causal explanations. You also should discuss here some previous findings. The review (and the introduction of the article) will be very helpful in this section (~2nd paragraph).
Hypothesis and predictions: Describe the main question of the research article and their hypothesis. What was the reason to do the study? What were they expecting? You should find this in the beginning of the research article (~3rd paragraph).

Experimental design and methods: Here you will explain the experimental design and approaches the scientists used to answer their hypothesis and main question. You do not need to describe the methods in detail, but explain what experiments they used and why (~3rd and 4th paragraph).

Results and discussion: Describe the results of the research article and discuss the findings. What are the implications of the study? How do their findings contribute to the advance of the field? Future research? (~5th paragraph)

Conclusion: Here you should include your opinion about the article and its findings. Did the study have an impact on you? What is your position about the topic now that you read the article? Is it different from the one described in your part 1 essay? (~6th paragraph).
