Read AIDS and Its Metaphors by Susan Sontag
The purpose of AIDS and Its Metaphors is to show how the way we talk and think about AIDS makes the disease even worse than it actually is. The book argues that the metaphorical packaging of AIDS increases the suffering of people with AIDS while creating anxiety among the population at large.
In your five page (double spaced; also include a References page as page six) reading response, include the following:
How does Susan Sontag (the author) define metaphor? In her eyes, how are metaphors potentially influential and how might they impact how we think and talk about an issue?
Discuss two specific metaphors Sontag presents about AIDS (she presents several you can pick from). How do they manifest?
Choose a health issue that interests you and search for it on Google news (it can be the same one you chose for your campaign critique). Read the news articles you find. What metaphors are employed in discussions of your health issue (use APA citations to cite the articles you find)? How might they impact how audiences think about the health issue and talk about the health issue?
If you were to design a campaign around the health issue you chose in #3, how would you take into account the metaphors that surround it?
In a New York Times review, critic Paul Robinson stated, the disease itself, and not the way we talk about it, is the true source of its horror. Respond to the quote to what extent do you agree or disagree? Present a convincing argument to support your stance.
