Various organizations have started to collect DNA samples from participants for a variety of different services (DNA can be used to discover ones genealogical background or to figure out which medical treatment is best for a given patient). The participants assume when they are providing their DNA that it will be used for the service they signed up for and only that service. Some police agencies are trying to get access to these DNA databases in order to solve some cases (in particular, cold cases and unsolved sexual assault crimes). Based on Beccarias notion of a social contract do you believe that citizens should be comfortable with having their DNA results shared with the government since their purpose is to catch criminals and close old criminal cases? Why or why not?
6. As we discussed in class this week, Lombrosos Born Criminal (Atavism) theory has been largely discredited in the present day. Modern genetics research indicates that criminal behavior tends to run in families. Do you believe that this is a function of nature (biology) or nurture (child rearing)? Why?
