To do well in this assignment, first do the listening, viewing, and reading. Use note-taking strategies for identifying interesting and/or useful claims the sources make. This paper should have the following elements:
you will analyze a news article on climate change to illustrate how the materials assigned can be applied to a contemporary example. There are two parts to this:
First, read chapter 2 from the Hammond book. What are the frameworks that he sets up to understand how the news media function in the larger context of climate change? How does the news media relate to his argument about post-politics?
Next, find a news article. How can this news article help us understand how Hammond has talked about the news media? Does this article align with his assertions, or provide evidence to the contrary?
Then, read one of the two articles assigned for Wednesday: Constructing the millennial Other or Climate refugees or migrants?. Are there tools for analysis that they use that you find useful as you look at your news article? Are there representational strategies that they found that you also see in your news article?
Finally, look at your news article in light of these materials for the week. How can you use the news article explain a single connection between the materials and the news article? You are doing your own analysis of the news article, so use the assigned materials as your methodological and topical guide. One way to do this is to focus on a theme you find important for understanding how we can improve reporting on climate change.
When it comes time to write, structure your writing as follows:
Your paper is an analysis of your news article you found. That means that your thesis needs to be about the news article you chose to analyze. But it also needs to draw on the book and the article to explain how you are interpreting the news article and analyzing what it means in the context of climate change reporting.
