Examine how the formal elements, in association with viewing contexts, cause emotional and physical responses to the audience.

Original instructions attached in files.

Here are my aditional instructions:

This is a close reading of a scene from a horror film.
It is in 2 parts:

1 (around 3 pages) : A close formal analysis (identify specific aesthetic elements (e.g cinematography, editing, mise-en-scene, sound etc. Demonstrate how they work together in the scene to create meaning.)
One paragraph must briefly describe tthe scene and contextualize it within the film.

2 (around 2 pages): A subjectve reflection (own personal experence from the scene). Examine how the formal elements, in association with viewing contexts, cause emotional and physical responses to the audience.
Highlight how and why the film achieved this.
Consider how the environment in which you watch the film shapes the experience (theatre? day? night? laptop? with friends? alone?)

Structure: Intro, Thesis + Thesis Statement, Body Paragraphs, Conclusion

The film I have chosen is “Hereditary” directed by Ari Aster. It is available on Netflix.

You may choose one of these scenes that I’ve highlighted to use for this paper.
Scene 1: Charlie’s death reveal (min 37:00 to min 38:30)
Scene 2: Annie’s suicide in the attic (hour 01: 56)
Scene 3: Paimon King (Peter) crowning (hour 2:00)

Additional notes from me that you can use within the essay:
Annie is not a classic female victim of horror. She does not simply react to the “monster’s” actions . The horror takes a motherly psychological form rather than the “damsel in distress” trope. There is nobody to save her from the reality that is her family: the son (killed her daughter, new cult leader) her own mother (cult queen) her husband (skeptic, believes she is sick). It is a contemporary take on the terrorized woman victim. She herself indulges in the paranormal (ouija board, attempting to understand cult. The horror resides in her fate as a mother with a family from Hell, literally.

Please do briefly read the resources included within the pdf instructions I included (“The Concept of Cinematic Excess” and “Film Bodies”) and use them to formulate the thesis statement. Remember that it is key in this paper to analyze the tension between the coherent elements and the excess.

Some notes I have from these resources are:
The Concept of Cinematic Excess is anything that does not contribute directly to creating a narrative. Thngs such as:
– compositon of visual elements within frame
– reptotove shots, pacing
– textures, colors, shapes
– style
– problematic or unclear elements
– props
– sound and music
