Need for Telemental Health (TMH) ServicesThose who have less access to mental health services are the underserved and rural populations, the implementation of telemental health services could improve access to care (Talarico, 2021). Less than 7% of psychiatrists and roughly 13% of all psychiatric APRNs in the United States live in rural areas (Adams et al., 2018). Telemental health services can lead to better medication adherence, reduced hospitalizations, symptom reduction, reduced missed appointments, increased access, and cost savings. TMH consults has been found to be helpful to primary care providers. TMH consultation in the emergency department can reduce boarding of psychiatric patients has potential to improve care.Main Components of TMHTMH services uses technology such as videoconferencing, mobile applications, and computer programs to provide mental healthcare (Adams et al., 2018). Providers not specialized in mental healthcare can use TMH services to consult with a mental health specialist to discuss a patient’s mental health treatment options and diagnosis. Patients can participate directly with TMH services in videoconference sessions with a mental health specialist as a direct or billable encounter. Providers who wish to utilize TMH need to maintain security, patient privacy and confidentiality, and provider credentialing for privileges and licensing in each state they are practicing in.Applicable Mental Health Settings for Implementation of TMHTMH best practice guidelines were developed for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs), psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors (Adams et al., 2018).
