Please find attached here your Individual Disaster Preparedness Project. Every student should individually demonstrate concepts of disaster preparedness to their personal situations in an individual project. Students will select the most pertinent natural hazard to them, based on current risks posed by their current location. For example, if a student lives at the base of a steep mountainside that is also within the floodplain, they would need to indicate this situational information, and then choose the risk that is the most pressing. Course theory must be applied to demonstrate appropriate comprehension of the risks and management of the selected hazard, and a preparedness response will be created to address the risks. The project will be graded based on originality (5), creativity (5), accuracy (5) and applicability (5). Students must ensure that they clearly explain/identify what type of disaster(s) they are creatively demonstrating, as well as how they will prepare for and respond to the identified natural hazard. Students are required to prepare a 5 minute presentation of their preparednes plan in addition to any written materials. While this assignment presents an opportunity to exercise creative freedom in conveying research, it must be emphasized that all work needs to be grounded in course theory, while maintaining academic integrity – students need to ‘think outside of the box’, while using appropriate referencing (Chicago, APA, etc) and composition (academic, not conversational, language).
