One curl was performed while the palm was facing up (traditional curl position),one with the thumb facing up, and one with the palm facing downward. An MVC (maximum voluntary contraction) was performed for both theBiceps and Brachioradias for normalization purposes. It is necessary to normalize to an MVC so everyone is on “the same playing field.” We can’tjust compare the raw EMG data because gender, level of fitness, number of motor units, etc. will affect the amplitude of the signal. By normalizing each person’s data to their own max we take those factors out of the picture and all that remains is the impact of the activity orposition. 1. Remember that in order to compare data across subjects it must be normalized. The calculation for this is: %MVC=(trial value/muscle MVCvalue)*100. To give you something to compare to, I ran the calculations for the first row of data. When you do this for the first row they shouldmatch, if not let me know and I’ll help you work through it. After you have the formulas right in the first row highlight those values and drag them down to fill the rest of the columns (in otherwords, youshouldn’t have to type the formula in every cell) 3.
