Have you ever made a split-second decision, but wondered after the fact, “what if I had chosen a different option?” Part of studying ethics is the ability to assess the short and long-term consequences of a decision and then choose the option that will have the more favorable outcomes. This module’s assignment gives you the opportunity to turn back the hands of time and examine a time when you wish you would have selected a different path.
In a 2-3 page paper, summarize a time when you had to make an ethical decision. Explain how your different options would affect the outcome. What were some external factors that impacted your decision? If you would have been given more time to make your decision, how would this change your approach or outcome?

Summary of a time when I had to make an ethical decision: One time I had to make an ethical decision was when I was working as a customer service representative for a large retail company. One day, a customer called in with a complaint about a product they had purchased. The customer was extremely angry and demanded a full refund. After reviewing the situation, I found that the product was in fact defective, but our company’s policy only allowed for a store credit.
Options and their consequences: My options were to either follow the company’s policy and offer a store credit, or to deviate from the policy and offer a full refund in order to appease the customer. If I followed the company’s policy, the customer would likely still be dissatisfied and may leave negative feedback about our company. However, if I deviated from the policy and offered a full refund, it could set a dangerous precedent for other customers to expect the same treatment. Additionally, it could also potentially cause problems with my manager or other higher-ups in the company if they found out.
External factors that impacted my decision: The external factors that impacted my decision were the customer’s level of anger and dissatisfaction, as well as the potential consequences of deviating from company policy. Additionally, the customer’s feedback could have a significant impact on the company’s reputation and customer loyalty.
If given more time to make the decision: If I had been given more time to make the decision, I would have consulted with my manager or another trusted colleague to get their perspective on the situation. I would have also considered other potential solutions, such as offering a partial refund or a store credit with an added bonus. Ultimately, I would have made a decision that balanced the customer’s needs with the company’s policies and reputation.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the ethical decision I faced as a customer service representative highlighted the importance of considering all options and their potential consequences before making a decision. It also emphasized the need to balance the needs of all parties involved, including the customer, the company, and oneself. This experience has taught me the importance of taking the time to make well-informed ethical decisions.
