We can’t deny the fact that the written word gives us access to an immeasurable, free world of ideas, information, and experiences. It’s difficult to imagine how we’d navigate our lives without literacy, one of our greatest privileges as humans. But what does it mean to be “literate?” Is it just knowing how to read and write? And what constitutes a “text?” How does the textual world reach beyond books and term papers? Is literacy merely reading and writing, or is it something greater? For most of us, learning to read and write is one of our most powerful formative experiences. Often, it is a family member or caregiver who teaches us the alphabet, reads us bedtime stories, shows us how to string letters into words, words into sentences, sentences into worlds. Write your own literacy narrative following the instructions on pp 36&37 of your text book.
