How is your learning going?

How is your learning going? How about chapter 1′s Themes & Streams of Tradition? Has the class helped you in the following areas? The Five Themes Relate chapter 1′s Themes section to what you′ve studied so far for this class. Have you continued to hear the basic musical elements explored in your Active Listening paper and discussion based on Theme 1 (Active) Listening? Which of the five Themes have been most difficult to hear and which have been easy to grasp? For example, Theme 3 Music & Technology and the advent of microphone technology, its impact on singing style. and the ushering in of a new kind of singer — the crooner. Of course, I don′t mean to tell you to write about crooning; so, if you use this example then you′ll need to relate at least one other example from this or other of the chapter one Themes. The Three Streams of Tradition Relate chapter 1′s Streams of Tradition section to what you have learned about how music from other parts of the world have influenced American music. Are you hearing these influences as you listen to the class′s listening guides and in your day-to-day listening? To the point, have you begun to distinguish specific differences between the musical/cultural blend of one cultural stream versus another — the Anglo stream, the African stream, the Latin stream? For example: differences in instruments used, lyrical themes* used, rhythms used, etc. And it may be that when listening for musical elements (Theme One, chapter one) among the different traditions is one of your strengths, then you most likely have started to listen for musical differences based on the other of the five Themes found in chapter one. *Lyrical themes: When you talk about a lyrical theme please go beyond the words and the storyline. Tell how the music enhances the meaning of a word or song. Maybe a certain word or instrument is emphasized in a certain way. Blue notes, etc. Self- Assessment You have completed almost 1/2 of the course. It′s time to reflect on your work and address three strengths, two weaknesses, and your biggest question. Be specific and consider the following: what is your recurring question(s) as you listen, read, do assignments, discussions, and quizzes? What has helped? How could you better address your weaknesses? Ask for tips; be specific. What in this class has been most difficult to grasp or easiest to understand? In your response posts, find fellow students to whom you can give tips and substantive, specific encouragement. It′s likely that one of your strengths is another student′s weakness. As other students read your original post and responses, they′ll need to know what made it possible for you to grasp an aspect of the class or which of your study habits made it possible to overcome those weaknesses. For this discussion read at least ten students′ original posts. So, in addition to the required original and three response posts, you will be graded on the number of posts that you′ve read. Reading other students′ work always helps.
