How often does each of the chores get done?

First Part: To give you a fairly realistic experience of what it is like to combine work and family obligations, please work through the attached word document (Balancing Work and Family), deciding what responsibilities you personally would prefer to take on, both in terms of career and in terms of domestic work. Then, add up the hours per day you have planned for yourself in terms of work, chores, and personal time. Post your results for the last two parts (6Totals and 7 Grand total). Second Part: In the reading attached below “Joey’s Problem,” the researcher discussed the division of household labor in the Holt family–the so-called “upstairs-downstairs” division. The couple views this agreement as an equitable solution to the problem they “once had” although the author of this book (Arlie Hochschild) disagreed. To further understand the family myth, we are going to discuss the details of this household chore division. Based on the reading, list the household chores that you think Nancy Holt is responsible for (upstairs chores) and the ones Evan Holt is responsible for (downstair chores); Is this division fair? If not, why do you think it is not fair? (think about who is in charge of what household chores? How often does each of the chores get done? Are the chores equally flexible in terms of the ways/times it needs to be done? Which chores involve more cognitive labor you also read this week?)If this division is unfair to Nancy Holt, why do you think Nancy, a self-identified egalitarian, accepts and views this division as equitable? Note this is the family myth referred to by the author.
