Depending on the constructs of the design of the research The Hawthorne effect could change the outcomes of the data that would be collected. The Hawthorne effect is a risk to keep the legitimacy of the data being collected because participants adjust their behavior because they know they are being analyzed (Gray, & Grove, 2021). Depending on the buzz in the hospital while trying to implement lower levels of intervention can have a negative effect with staff that are participating in the study. There are a lot of politics involved on a unit. If the researcher is doing this research in their own facility and the staff knows who is doing the research this can cause the motivation to use such tactics as REsTRAIN. It is shown that staff must feel safe to be able to implement other intervention besides restraints (Duxbury, Thomson, Scholes, Jones, Baker, Downe, Greenwood, Price, Whittington, & McKeown, 2019). Staff at the facility could not agree with the views of the researchers and be less likely to try to implement the lower levels of intervention. The staff are driven socially by many different causes. To stop this from happening this study would have to be performed in a hospital where the researchers are not known. There should be two distinct groups in this study. One without their needs met and the other with lower levels of intervention implemented to reduce restraint events. Both groups would have to be informed of what they need to do when a patient is about to experience a crisis or is experiencing crisis. By researching an outside hospital that the researcher is not known can reduce the risk of the Hawthorne effect from occurring. The staff knowing that they are being monitored will likely not sabotage an opportunity to engage the patient if they do not know the research team personally. The social environment that you choose to conduct the research in matters. Staff may change their performance depending on interpersonal relationships.
