Discuss the role of insurance or Medicare/Medicaid for your chosen population. Consider the following questions:
What (if any) type of healthcare coverage does your vulnerable population typically have?

What are the barriers your vulnerable population faces in obtaining healthcare from a financial viewpoint?

What steps have been taken by the private and/or public section to overcome these barriers and insure adequate healthcare for your vulnerable population?

What are the current or potential health implications your selected population faces as a result of their insurance (or lack of) and the effects this has on access to healthcare?

Identify one policy that impacts your chosen vulnerable population: The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) of 2008.

Review the policy and analyze the following aspects:
Describe the purpose of the policy

What aspects of healthcare are impacted by the policy? How?

Who might be perceived as beneficiaries of this policy? Explain why.

Who might be perceived as being adversely impacted by this policy? Explain why.

How is your target population impacted (positively or negatively) by this policy?

Based on what you know about the vulnerable population and the policies impacting the population, describe how the nurse is involved in advocating for this population.

Identify an area of health policy related to your vulnerable population where your team would advocate for change.
Provide rationale (evidence) for the need for work in this area.

Develop a list of talking points you would use when discussing policy issues with your state or federal representative.

Using the Triple Aim as your foundation, develop your strategy of how nurses and other members of the healthcare team (and others you may identify) can improve the health of the chosen vulnerable population.
