Recall the example of the soldiers going to war who oppose killing in principle.

Recall the example of the soldiers going to war who oppose killing in principle. According to the principle of double effect, killing enemy soldiers is justified if the intention is to defend the country. The nuclear bombs dropped at Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II were justified on a similar basis, the intention for doing so being to end the war.
As we have seen with more than one contemporary issue, intention plays a big role in justifying certain actions. Reflect on the examples above. Do you believe it is okay to employ any means necessary to achieve desired military objectives? Why, or why not? Explain your answer, being sure to consider the principle of double effect and just war criteria.
