The purpose of this journal entry is to help you reflect on any interesting facts about Everyday Talk that you notice around you, as well as their possible relation to different concepts we will be learning about in class. Your entry should be about 2 pages long (double-spaced) and include examples. Possible data and topics for this first entry include, but are not limited to, face-to-face conversations, computer mediated communication, or everyday talk on TV (interviews, reality shows, etc.). You can discuss them in relation to any of the concepts or broader issues we have been learning about in class so far: eg. facework, altercasting, speech communities, disclaimers, cooperative principle, person-referencing practices, etc. Your entry will only be available to you and your instructor. Since this journal occurs during our gender and sexuality module, I would suggest trying to write about gender and sexuality! Note: In order to receive full credit for this assignment, you need to include and discuss actual examples of everyday talk that you hear/see around you. You can either directly quote or paraphrase the interaction.
