This assignment is meant to help you prepare for the midterm essay.First, make sure you’ve read the midterm essay prompt. Think about what primary text you want to write about for your midterm essay, and what big idea you want to think about in relation to that text. Then read the “Research Guidelines” handout in the “Assignments” tab on Blackboard. Make sure you understand it. Then, do some research on what other scholars have written about your chosen text/idea. Find one outside scholarly source that seems useful in helping you think about your text/idea. Please make sure you’ve read the research guidelines handout carefully so that you end up choosing an acceptable source.Once you’ve done this preparatory work, write four paragraphs for this assignment, no more, no less.Paragraph 1: tell me what text you want to write about and why. Tell me what idea you want write about in relation to that text, and how you think writing about this text and idea together will help you illuminate some issue or explore some interpretive question. What is your driving interpretive question in pursuing this topic? Try a stab at a statement of argument.Paragraph 2: tell me what outside scholarly source you have read. What does that source argue? Explain how, in a detailed way, it is helpful/pertinent for the essay you want to write. Using quotes from the source and explaining those quotes, as a method of explaining the source itself, is a very good idea here.Paragraph 3: analyze one passage from your chosen primary text. Use the MEAL paragraph format here and tie your analysis to the big idea/question that you want to pursue in the paper. If you’re really ambitious, tie in how what you’ve learned from your outside source helps you make your analysis of this passage work.Paragraph 4: draw some conclusions from paragraphs 2-3. How does your work with the analysis of the text and your use of your source help you present and develop the main interpretive (and arguable) idea or question of the paper, as you imagine it now anyway?Make sure you are grounding your ideas in close attention to the details of the texts (both your primary and secondary source), and that you’re quoting and citing properly. Include a works cited page at the end, written in correct MLA style.
