Child Welfare Essay
Using course content and at least four professional (text and journal) references to write a formal academic essay that identifies a child welfare issue relevant to Canadian children and families. Students will use material discussed in class, link policy and law, and begin to articulate a professional stance that is consistent with social service values. Two additional sources may be used from the World Wide Web. Written work must be clear and concise.

Child Welfare Essay Marking Criteria
Review of the literature: Explain the history of the issue; What is known? Who is affected? What are the risk factors? Describe current local, provincial, or national interventions/ services available to address the issue; any reporting requirements?

Review of social work practice (linked to course content): What theories, policies, or laws are used to determine social work practice in addressing this issue? How are issues of blame, shame, and fault relating to this addressed, not addressed or perpetuated? How is the family, the child, culture, racism, societal indifference, adverse childhood trauma addressed within the scope of the issue and social work practice? What are the challenges? What are the successes?

Summary of personal reflection & critical analysis: What are some of the ethical issues you might struggle with? What is missing from social work practice addressing this issue? How has researching this issue impacted you? Has your research shifted your thinking about how you would practice; how would you begin to make changes to your practice? How does this relate to a professional stance consistent with social service work values?
