Case Study
Thinking Ethically: What are the ethical boundaries of tracking employee activities? (p. 326)
Review the case and address the two corresponding questions.
The case study, “Thinking Ethically: What are the ethical boundaries of tracking employee activities?”, presents a situation where a company is considering tracking their employees’ internet usage and email communications. The company is considering this tracking in order to improve productivity and prevent employee misconduct. The case study asks the reader to consider the ethical implications of this proposed tracking.
The first question asks the reader to consider whether the company has a right to track their employees in this way. The second question asks the reader to consider whether the tracking would be effective in achieving the company’s goals.
In my opinion, the company does not have a right to track their employees’ internet usage and email communications. I believe that this tracking would invade the employees’ privacy and would not be an effective way to improve productivity or prevent employee misconduct.
