What effects does successful leadership have on student learning?

As discussed in week one, being an effective instructional leader is a key component of the academic success of students. There are several leadership characteristics that lend themselves to excellence in instructional leadership. The Transformational Leadership Style is one that tends to breed success in an educational setting. Transformational leaders tend to be energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate and want to be a part of the process. In this multi-step assignment, we will dive into leadership styles and leadership teams.

Step 1. Review Materials

To begin this assignment, review the following materials from your required readings and resources:

Shared leadership through instructional leadership teams
Transformational leadership
How leadership influences student learning.
There are a number of excellent articles linked within the Transformational Leadership article that would be worth your time to check out!

Step 2. Leadership Style

After you have read the articles and watched the video indicated above, respond to the following questions:

What effects does successful leadership have on student learning?
Which style of leadership do you feel is exemplified by the principal in the video? Provide support for your answer.
The Transformational Leadership article suggests there are four (4) components of Transformational Leadership: Intellectual Stimulation, Individualized Consideration, Inspirational Motivation, and Idealized Influence. Which of these did you see exemplified in the video (there may be several if not all) and give an example of each trait you identify.
Your responses, in total, should be a minimum of one page.

Step 3. Leadership Teams

Consider this scenario: You are the new principal at a low performing middle school. You learn your new school does not have any type of school improvement or instructional leadership team in place. Because of everything you learned about instructional leadership in this program, you feel it is critical to have an effective team in place.

Create a plan that details the steps you would take to create this team and to guide their work that leads to improving the academic performance of your school. In your plan, be sure to have answers to the following questions:

What information or process will be used to determine team members?
Is being on a team an expectation or invitation?
What types of information will you provide to create the why? behind their work?
What is the first issue or task you would like for them to tackle?
Considering some of the information you learned from this week’s readings on leadership styles, what style will you employ to motivate your team?
What are two (2) examples of things you will do that support the chosen leadership style?
