Freedom Writers (2007). Inspirational films often involve a character’s struggle to overcome major obstacles and/or conflicts. At the end of the film, there is usually a feeling of catharsis among the viewers. Catharsis is a term coined by Aristotle which refers to an extreme release of emotion, particularly pity or sorrow, at the end of a successful drama. In this week’s selections, each film features a protagonist whose passion for teaching adolescent students is intense, and each teacher is able to affect positive change among the students through the force of his or her personality and principles, even against great odds.

For this Directed Writing, focus on the conflicts being faced by the characters in the film from multiple points of view. (You may wish to refer back to the PowerPoint on Conflicts in Films.) For example, what is a main conflict the protagonist is facing? Does he or she have character flaws in addition to the positive characteristics which define him or her? What about the students? Focus on one or two and discuss the challenges they face. Are they insurmountable? What lessons do the students learn that are valuable? Are the students truly changed by films end? Also, in this Directed Writing, be sure to reflect upon this film in a personal way as well. Have you ever had a teacher who had a major impact upon your life? If so, what did he or she do to affect positive change?
