Who discovered the Americas? While conventional history celebrates Columbus as the one who discovered the Americas, this achievement is hotly contested in the world of history today. In this paper, students will examine three different cultures which may have discovered the Americas before Columbus. These could include the Native Americans, Vikings, Olmecs, Egyptians, or Chinese. Students will trace and explain how the selected civilizations came across the continents, what settlements or trade relationships were developed, and the long-term impact of the discovery. Students will also discuss the important explorers who helped in the discovery and compare their achievements. Students will then discuss why it is important to examine the pre-Columbian discoveries of the Americas and how they are part of the narrative of discovery, settlement, and colonization of the new world.
