Press Release: I will have to get approval and more info on this today and my due date could be sooner. The assignment is to write a release about Mr. Butler′s talk. It should be written in third person and include: Headline – a short and simple headline to grab the reader′s attention Dateline – start the first paragraph with the city, state and date (see sample attached) Lead paragraph – include as many of the 5 w′s as you can in this first paragraph, tell as many of these things as possible – who came to speak, what they talked about, where and when and if possible why. Here′s an example″ Professor Aileen Katcher spoke to the Advanced Public Relations class at Tennesssee State University today about what the new rules of public relations are and how the students can best put them to use. The following paragraphs should include a narrative about what the speaker shared, using examples as appropriate, putting the most important information first (i.e. inverted pyramid). The second or third paragraph should include a quote from the speaker you are writing about. At the end of the release, include a boilerplate with a heading. It can be about Advanced Public Relations class or about Tennessee State University. This is to educate the journalist who is reading it about the organization that is writing the release. It′s like a business card in a sense. See the boilerplates in the attached example See the sample press release from Mr. Bailey. I marked it up to note the headline, dateline, lead paragraph, quote and boilerplate. (John Lewis Release markups) I hope it helps.
