Write a sensory essay that vividly describes a person, place, or thing that is important to you and is connected to an abstract term. Throughout your writing, make sure to use details from each of the 5 senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing) to describe your subject and abstract term.
Examples: Perhaps there is a place you’ve been that makes you feel complete at “peace.” Describe this place using all 5 senses. OR perhaps there is a person in your life that you believe represents “wisdom.” Describe this person using all 5 senses. OR perhaps there is an object that is symbolic of “love” to you. Describe this object using all 5 senses.
HELPFUL TIPS:
Consider using figurative language (simile, metaphor, imagery, personification, etc.) to further enhance your sensory details.
Be sure to organize your essay into multiple paragraphs with focused topics. Will you organize your essay by sense (sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing) or will you use a narrative format describing an experience you’ve had with your subject?
Consider the dominant impression of your subject, whether positive or negative, that you want to leave your reader. Consider using your introduction and/or conclusion paragraphs to include details that accurately illustrate that dominant impression and connect it to the abstract term you chose.
