Writing a critical response essay involves summarizing, assessing, and offering our own opinion about an argument. Writing a summary of another argument is a first step toward joining an academic conversation and finding our voice within it. It encourages us to understand another point of view fully and describe it precisely so others can understand. The next step is to assess the argument; that is, to decide whether it is valid. Is it a strong argument that we can wholeheartedly support? Is it partly right and partly wrong? Is it deeply flawed? In our assessment and response, we get to clarify our own take on whether or not the argument holds up under scrutiny. Finally, in our response, we get to offer our own ideas or recommendations about what to add to the conversation. Our recommendations may include: taking the argument a step further; calling for clarification, for limits on an argument, for more support; finding a middle ground on a controversial topic; pointing out an alternate claim or reason; and/or suggesting a different way to frame an issue.
