Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham as foils.

For your first paper, choose either Pride and Prejudice or Frankenstein and consider the ways the author uses conflict between characters, or within a single character, to show us character development or transformation. There are many tensions and fallibilities to consider; how and for what purpose does Austen or Shelley present characters at war with themselves or each other? What does this suggest about a dominant theme or idea in the novel? As a place to start, you might see the conflict between selfishness and self-awareness. Or, you can focus on hubris, pride, or indulgence in a character which creates conflict within one’s self or between characters. Another way to consider the question is what does Austen or Shelley show us about inner turmoil and transformation? You should choose no more than one or two characters as a way of demonstrating transformation as a result of conflict or turmoil. What is the struggle and what are its results? What is the novel saying about that struggle within the chosen character/s?
